To provide even greater thermal stability and solvent resistance, tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) containing fluoroelastomer terpolymers were introduced in 1959. The latest FKM polymers have a much broader fluids resistance profile than standard fluoroelastomers, and are able to withstand strong bases and ketones as well as aromatic hydrocarbons, oils, acids, and steam. In 1975 a new fluoroelastomer family was introduced by Asahi Glass Co., FEPM, based on an alternating copolymer of TFE and propylene. It is marketed under the trade name AFLAS®.

The chemical resistance and high-temperature stability is due to the bulkiness of the fluorine atoms, shielding the polymer backbone and carbon-fluor bond from attack, and the high bonding energy of the carbon-fluor bond.

FFKM gives the indication for the types of improved properties for different applications.

Material: Fluorocarbon elastomers
Fluorocarbon rubber is an elastomer

Fluorocarbon elastomers are highly fluorinated carbon-based polymers that are used in applications that must withstand aggressive chemical and ozone attacks.

In general, with increasing fluorine content, the resistance to chemical attack is improved, while the low temperature properties decrease. However, there are special quality fluorocarbons that do have a high fluorine content at low temperature properties.

Good qualities:

  • Chemical compatibility
  • Good temperature resistance
  • Low compression setting
  • Resistant to minerals, oils and fats
  • Good gas tightness
  • Excellent resistance to non-polar media
  • Excellent weather and aging stability
  • Very good oxygen and ozone stability
  • Operating temperature range from -26 °C to +205/230 °C (-15 °F to +400/440 °F)
  • When used briefly, the material can tolerate even higher temperatures
  • Special compounds with improved chemical resistance are available
  • Brake fluids based on glycol
  • Low molecular weight organic acids

FFKM
FFKM are perfluoroelastomeric compounds that contain an even greater amount of fluorine than FKMO fluoroelastomers.

FFKM have an improved resistance to high temperatures and chemicals and are even resistant to environments where oxygen plasma is present for many hours. Certain grades have a maximum continuous service temperature of 327 °C / 621 °F. They are often used to make o-rings and gaskets that are used to make o-rings and gaskets that are used in applications where contact with hydrocarbons or highly corrosive liquids the case, or when a wide temperature range is encountered.
